As most bibliophiles (such as myself) will tell you, if you can’t find the answer to someting, then look in a book. (Forget that whole Google thing!) But what happens when what you’re looking for can’t be found in a book? It can’t be found on Google? How do we find the answers that we are looking for?

Well, it used to be that we didn’t even have Google to rely on. There were books finding the answers to our questions. You know – encyclopedias! Crazy, right? But anyway, we now have the Google. And usually when there’s a question or the need of some random fact, I say, “Let us go to the Google!” But, the Google is not always helpful. In fact, sometimes you can get sucked into the Google and spend hours of mindless clicking, forgetting what it was you were originally searching for. Continue reading →

Three days later and there are many people who are still having a difficult time with the results of the U.S. election. I wrote about this on Wednesday this week with my post “Donald Trump in President-elect. Now What?” however, there are worsening reactions to the future that lays before us. During times that trouble people, we try to seek the path that is best for each one of us. To me, I think that there are many lessons that can be learned or re-learned through reading the Harry Potter series. I have seen other articles that look at this exact concept, and you can find them pretty easily as well. However, I think there is one quote from Albus Dumbledore that I think we all need to pay attention to: Continue reading →

There is no surer foundation for a beautiful friendship than a mutual taste in literature.

-P. G. Wodehouse

Many times conversations have begun with the discussion of books, at least for me they have. Even before I became an English teacher, many of my conversations growing up and in college were about the books that I had read or was currently reading.

Growing up, my parents always read to me and then Continue reading →

Donald Trump, Donald Trump is president, Election Day, Life, NaBloPoMo, news, news articles, now what, President-elect, Presidential election, US election, writing

The day after Election Day. Every four years those in the U.S. wake up to it and we wonder if the candidate we voted for will become our next President. For many, the answer is yes, and for the rest…well, what next becomes the question. However, this year is much different. This year is historic in the fact that the President Elect has never held a political office. The President Elect has not worked in Washington. And so – whether you voted for Donald Trump or not – there are many questions that need to be answered. There are many unknowns for what will happen next.  Continue reading →

Within our society we are conditioned to know what we want to do with the rest of our lives by an early age. We’re supposed to have a profession picked out by the time that we’re 18 and to then dedicate our years in college to pursuing that particular choice. However, I’m in my 30s (early 30s) and still feel like I’m just discovering who I am. I continue to find new interests, find new talents, read new things that inspire me. I find myself thinking about my future as though I were still a kid – discovering who I am. Am I alone in this? Continue reading →

In a movie I was watching today, one of the characters had a yin yang tattoo representing the perfect union of opposites. For some reason this line alone was what stood out to me about the film and got me thinking most.

I think that more of us need to have a yin yang tattoo. Well, perhaps not – but what we do need is to find balance in our lives. In our lives we sometimes find ourselves drawn to one part of our lives more than another. Continue reading →
